dok.incubator traces at Sundance Film Festival

dok.incubator is delighted to announce another 3 films developed in dok.incubator workshop are now competing in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at Sundance Film Festival! In the last 7 years of the workshop 9 films have already been selected for Sundance.

World Cinema Documentary Competition

An intimate portrait “The Disappearance of My Mother” by Beniamo Barrese (IT), where we witness a once-iconic fashion model striving to escape the world of images and disappear for good. But her son’s determination to make a final film about her sparks an unexpected collaboration and confrontation with the camera’s gaze .

“Lapü”, directed by César Alejandro Jaimes & Juan Pablo Polanco (CO) takes us on a sensory journey through the desert of La Guajira in Columbia where a young Wayuu woman exhumes her cousin’s remains buried in the middle of the Guajira desert in order to meet her for the last time.

With remarkably intimate access Petra Costa’s “The Edge of Democracy” (BR) follows Brazil’s embattled leaders Dilma Rousseff and Lula da Silva as they grapple with a scandal born out of their country’s fascist past and inflamed by a furious and ideologically divided nation. Like a great Greek tragedy, the film witnesses their rise and fall and the tragically polarized nation that remains.

Moreover, we are happy to congratulate also another three films, competing this year at Sundance, made by dok.incubator ex-participants and tutors!

The Magic Life of V.” by Tonislav Hristov and “Advocate”, edited by Yael Bitton compete in the World Cinema Documentary Competition and Nanfu Wang’s “One Child Nation” has been selected for the U.S. Documentary Competition.

Applications for the 2019 workshop are open now!

DEADLINE: 30th January

SUNDANCE 2017: Two dok.incubator teams in competition!

We are very proud and happy that two films developed at dok.incubator 2016 are competing at Sundance: Adam Sobel’s debut ‘The Workers Cup’; and ‘The Good Postman’, by established Bulgarian director Tonislav Hristov!

Adam’s first feature-length follows the young African and Asian labourers building the World Cup stadium in Qatar. Competing in their own football tournament, the Workers Cup, they hope that achieving glory on the pitch will be their ticket out of the squalid labour camps.

The Workers Cup’ simply wouldn’t have been possible without dok.incubator’s crash course in documentary finishing. Equal parts creative inspiration, logistical preparation, and editorial perspiration, it offered something we desperately needed: a clear path to complete our film.  – Adam Sobel

Tonislav Hristov has directed eight films but ‘The Good Postman’, which premiered at IDFA, is his biggest success yet. In a dying Bulgarian village, local postman Ivan has a vision: if he becomes mayor, the village will be saved – by welcoming refugees.

dok.incubator was a great experience.  It was lots of fun – we met good people and most importantly, professionals, who will help you to finish your film! –  Tonislav Hristov

The films compete in the prestigious Sundance World Documentary Competition, which selects only 12 films from around the world every year.

DOK.Incubator Preview 2016

DOK.Incubator Preview 2016

Four DOK.Incubator films at IDFA 2016

Four DOK.Incubator projects, three from this years’ workshop and one from 2015, will premiere at IDFA in November, bringing the total of our films competing at the Dutch film festival to 16 out of 40 since DOK.Incubator’s creation in 2011.

Festival-goers will be introduced to Ivan, The Good Postman /FI, BG/, who has a vision. If he becomes mayor of his dying Bulgarian village, they will be saved – by welcoming refugees. The film will compete for Feature-Length Documentary, alongside fellow DOK.Incubator 2016 project: Burning Out /BE, FR, CH/ follows the staff of a famous Parisian hospital, where the employees are undervalued, overworked, imposed stringent efficiency and productivity targets by the management, and on the verge of burning out.

Our final project from 2016 is a fascinating exploration of real female sexuality, as the two directors of Venus /DK, NO/ create a space for an intimate conversation about desire, lust, fantasy, shame and sexual freedom among young women. The film will feature in the IDFA Competition for First Appearance, where it will meet 2015 DOK Incubator project Amazona /CO/, following the journey of a mother and daughter to the Amazon to confront and heal the wounds inflicted by the past.

IDFA runs from November 16th to 27th.
