Barbara Toennieshen discovered her passion for editing in the early 90s during her film studies at the HfbK in Hamburg. She has been fascinated by the possibilities of storytelling as a film editor in the documentary and feature film sector ever since, with a particular interest in creative documentary and arthouse cinema that challenges the audience and performs magic on the cinema screen. Barbara's montage looks for the story behind the plot, for vertical narratives and opportunities for projection, but above all for people and not clichés.
She is fortunate to have worked with directors Edward Berger, Eliza Kubarska, Laura Poitras, Ali Samadi Ahadi and Marcus H. Rosenmüller, among others. Her work has been screened and awarded at the Berlinale, IDFA, Sundance and Hot Docs, with her most recent documentary, The Wall of Shadows winning almost 30 prizes. Based in Berlin, Germany Barbara is a member of the German and European Film Academies and also DOK:SCHNITT:ZUKUNFT, a collective of well-known editors that campaigns for better conditions in documentary filmmaking.
