“Far from Maine” celebrates the power of friendship in the world’s most intractable conflict zone. It follows Roy, an Israeli filmmaker, who persuades his American husband to move to Tel Aviv, only to find themselves grappling with a judicial coup, a bloody war and their society's apparent indifference to Palestinians. Roy narrates this story to a Palestinian friend, Aseel, who changed Roy's relationship with his own family's Arabness as well as his understanding of what Israel-Palestine should be. Roy and Aseel met as teenagers at an American peace camp, whose alumni recount their experiences and the surprising life course of their community's star, Aseel. Their accounts highlight hidden interactions between identity, memory and taboo. Now, as Roy and his partner welcome a baby, he describes his dilemma to Aseel: how do you build a home in a place that’s falling apart?
